The next indigenous village you want to visit is Anlang just to the west of Daren. Immerse yourself in the culture of the Paiwan tribe right at the source of produces such as millet and djulis. Beinan Cultural Park is the largest prehistoric site in the country and is part of the National Museum of Prehistory. According to experts, it used to be a village inhabited by the Neolithic Beinan people. Take a stroll to see the thousand-year-old crescent stones and some of the relics that were left behind. Archeological digs are still ongoing, and you may have a  chance to witness them.

If you want to visit the beach, continue further north to Douli Beach (都歷沙灘), where you can drive right to the beach or learn how to surf at Torik Ocean Surf (都歷海洋教室). Before entering town, you’ll pass Water Running Upward (水往上流遊憩區), a stream that appears to flow uphill. Dulan Sugar Factory (新東糖廠文化園區) is hippie central, with a musical performance venue, café, restaurant, and bar serving Dulan’s own Highway 11 beer. Xiaoyeliu is the first noteworthy stop when heading north on Highway 11, about 10 minutes’ drive north of Taitung city.

The Museum’s shops have lots of art copies for sale that make perfect souvenir or gift item. From Taitung City, you take a train to Fangliao station, on the other side of the island. There are trains starting from Taitung city, but most of them start in Hualien. These trains are bound for Kaohsiung, but you do not have to go all the way to Kaohsiung. Just get off the train at Fangliao, it will be cheaper and faster. Tucked away in the southeast corner of Taiwan, Taitung is one of the least visited areas of the island amongst foreign tourists.
