Taiwan: A Detailed 2023 Guide Spiritual Travels

In winter waves are strong, and smaller during summer, making it a perfect spot for beginners. The village there is also quite nice, with an artsy vibe, mixed with the local aboriginal culture. You also have the possibility to visit some more remote villages, less touched by tourism but you’ll need to go through an agency and hire a local guide. Some tribes can have different social codes than what foreigners or even locals are used to, always exercise caution when visiting aboriginal villages. Taitung County has  a lot to offer, you could easily stay for two weeks there and do something new every day. Here is a “short” list of the best tourist attractions you can visit from Taitung City and of the best things to do in Taitung County, as well as some useful travel tips.
There’s a long stretch of nothing before reaching Langdao Village (朗島部落, Iraralay). It’s easy to miss at first, but just before Lover’s Cave, there’s a thin cave that you can enter and climb through to find A Thread of Sky (一線天), a large crack 台東 伴手禮 opening up on the other side. You’ll soon notice a well paved path leading off on the right to the coast. There’s nothing else to do in town, but if you’re spending the night, there a small bar called十一鄰Bar and a few simple restaurants.

One of Taiwan’s cheap products, yet most delicious souvenirs you can buy are dried fruits. This isn’t a high-end market, but you can be guaranteed that all products here, especially foods, are authentic. Here, you can buy a selection of dried fruits from mango to banana, even veggies. If sweet tooth’s run in the family, the pineapple cake in Taiwan is a must buy. It is a delicious buttery pastry with pineapple paste in the middle.
These take place twice a day, and only if there are enough people, so it’s better to come on the weekend and call first to confirm . Luye Highlands, which can be reached on a 30-minute scooter ride from Luye, are the site of the famous Taitung International Hot Air Balloon Festival every summer. Witnessing the festival, or riding in one of the ballons, is one of the top experiences to be had in Taitung.
Sanxiantai is is a good place to watch the sunrise and a great spot for photographers. Note that after you finish strolling through Taitung Night Market, which is near the bus station, you can walk to Siwei Night Market, which is smaller but also more local. While it’s true that Taitung  temples leave something to be desired, at least when compared to those you find in Taipei, Tainan, or Kaohsiung, they’re not a totally worthless pursuit. Note that while signs upon entering the park will direct you to a scenic lookout, you should continue to walk the trail after visiting the first viewpoint.

Lisong Hot Spring (栗松溫泉) is one of the most beautiful wild hot springs in Taiwan. The spring is known for its vibrant green and yellow colors painting the cliff from which it seeps down into riverside pools. Hi Fabian, we are currently in Lanyu and staying far away from main tourist attractions . We are literally stuck in one place because there are not even bicycles to rent. Our hotel owner said all rental bicycle shops are closed and obviously without a license, we can’t rent a scooter.

We also noticed a distinct lack of young Tao adults on the island. There were few teens to be seen hanging out or ripping around on scooters like you see in most aboriginal communities in Taiwan. The most common places we saw locals were farming the fields and drinking or chatting in groups on the elevated platforms found around the island, usually beside homes or facing the sea.
