The Cardiogenic Shock Registry builds on more than 20 years of quality improvement and registry experience rooted in the AHA’s Get With The Guidelines platform. Data from the registry will help inform the larger medical community on how best to treat cardiogenic shock. Dr. Katz then became a staff member at Children’s Hospital working with Nobel Laureate John F. Enders for the next 12 years researching viruses — specifically measles, a disease that at the time killed more than five to six million children each year globally. We were saddened this week to learn of the passing of our long-time Duke Health colleague, Dr. Sam Katz. A luminary in the field of infectious diseases and pediatrics, Katz was a beloved team member at Duke.
We also have had the start of the BacktoHeart22 Cardiology conference which is a Hybrid Medscape conference (in-person and Virtual) summarizing the years lessons in CV medicine. This conference led by Bob Harrington National Harbor vascular doctor and Fatima Rodriquez from Stanford and feature several interactive sessions. The conference started this AM with a powerful survivor story from Bob Harper who shared his near fatal Acute Heart Attack story.

Duke Kannapolis has developed a high level of community engagement by utilizing community advisory boards, marketing and communications, bilingual staff, events, and community partners including civic, church, and health organizations. Noting proven strategies for recruitment, retention, and engagement across diverse participant populations, Shah also attributed the success of Duke Kannapolis community engagement to bidirectional communication and 15 years of building trust with residents. Second year cardiology fellow Mark Kittipibul presented several poster sessions based on work he has done with Marat Fudim; there was an opportunity for Duke Heart team members to gather and mingle, and a JCF editorial board meeting to round things out. Having fostered numerous relationships with Duke Heart donors, grateful patients and the Duke Health development teams over many years, Ohman enjoys maintaining these connections.

After a career in surgical robotics and minimally invasive surgical procedures, he co-founded biocynetic™ in 2015, a software company aimed at eliminating the burden of gathering and analyzing disparate data sources to treat AFib, heart failure, and other types of chronic diseases. Dr. Hernandez has research interests in improving cardiovascular health and accelerating clinical evidence through outcomes research, clinical trials, comparative effectiveness and health policy. He had led multiple large-scale patient-centered research programs, registries and clinical trials aimed at improving health across multiple conditions such as NIH's Health System Collaboratory and PCORI's PCORnet resulting in more than 700 peer-reviewed publications. Adrian Hernandez, MD, MHS, is Executive Director, Duke Clinical Research Institute, and Vice Dean of the Duke University School of Medicine.
The ability to shape the national landscape of comparative effectiveness research through PCORI seems like the a position built for someone with her skills, passion, and desire to improve health through clinical science. Tracy is a world-class physician researcher who will undoubtedly bring critical thinking and common sense solutions that will have immediate impact on all of those around her. The RAndomized Cluster Evaluation of Cardiac ARrest Systems (RACE-CARS) trial covers a geographic area of 62 counties involving eight million residents and expects to enroll 20,000 cardiac arrest patients over a four-year period. It is one of the first U.S. registry-based trials, such that all eligible patients are included and data are efficiently collected in routine care, an approach that has been used with great success in large, efficient clinical trials in Europe.
“My family is still here in North Carolina, so it’s nice to be able to be closer to them,” he said. “I really love academic medicine fundraising and the opportunity to support Duke Heart is special to me because my father had care here. Dr. Milano was his provider and I can really attest to the amazing care that was provided to our family.

Prior to this, he had a long career in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, practicing in academic, private practice, and community hospital settings. Through a progressive tenure with Boston Scientific, David defined and ultimately led the enterprise digital and data efforts as Chief Digital Health & Data Officer and VP, Digital Health & Data Solutions. David established a growth-focused culture, innovated digital and data capabilities, created agile, iterative, lean, and user-focused development teams; and drove the enterprise toward digitalization. Early in his career, David led the design, development, and global commercialization of a suite of Virtual Reality Medical Simulators for Laerdal Medical .
Bharathi’s husband, Sudarshan Upadhya, PhD, MBA, is co-founder of Aestas Pharma, Inc., based here in Durham. Their son is a senior at Duke University, and their daughter is in the 6th grade. Outside of medicine, Bharathi has learned Bharatanatyam, a classical dance of India.
