Camping in the Sahara Desert, Morocco
Like his campsite, his Airbnb is very quaint and close-knit as well. More often than not you can climb to the top of the dunes and see no one. Instead of canvas tents like many of these desert luxury camps offer, the accommodations are geodesic dome-type tents that resemble the glass igloos you may have seen in places like Finland. Since these two deserts are similar, to choose one of the two you should take into account your time and budget.
The kids also took their shoes off ad played with the sand. After lunch, we did not go back to our hotel because we checked out in the morning after breakfast and left our bags in the car. We went straight to the where the camels were waiting and got ready for our one and half our ride to our camp site in the middle of the Sahara Desert.
We drank lukewarm weak coffee, ate rusks, and packed our backpack ready to trek on our camels. We cuddled under the stars and stared up at the milky way. The stars were so bright as we were in complete darkness, and it was strangely silent (except for the odd camel fart much to Julian’s delight).
And you can get a tour of the desert either by camel, 4x4WD, Quad bike, or Buggy driving. Sand dunes go on for miles, catching the sun and creating drastic shadows across the landscape. The sand itself is so soft and fine, and stretches out in perfectly striped sheets. The camel is equipped with a saddle of sorts, but it’s really just a series of strategically folded blankets and a sturdy metal handlebar.
Your luggage will stay with the vehicles and be dropped off at your camp while you finish your camel ride. Most Sahara desert camp packages include camel trekking. You will take a jeep out a short way into the desert and meet up with a small group of guides, and enough camels for your group. This was an experience I will never forget and one I’d recommend to anyone visiting Morocco.
Our drivers can pick you up in Casablanca, Marrakech, Ouarzazate or Zagora or any other location in Morocco, and transport you to to and from the camp. You will not find any flushing toilets, so may not have any other option but to rough it on the sand or probably in a very elementary toilet, where you must pour buckets of water to “flush”. If you have your own car, you will love the landscape as you drive there. Simply follow the highway N12 direction North-West until this highway becomes highway N9. The Dades Gorges are a series of gorges carved out in the mountain by the Dades River.
Regardless of the season, there’s a huge temperature difference between the day and night. The two most particular seasons are summer, with very hot days but pleasant nights and winter, with pleasant days but very cold nights. Love the narrative and your vivid description of your desert experience. What a joy it must have been for you to be in the desert at all different times of the day. I can honestly say that I have never seen a night sky as beautiful as the one over the Sahara.

If you are booking an organized trip to the Morocco Sahara Desert, make sure to ask if it is a private desert tour, or if you be will be traveling with a group of people. If it is the latter, then you will probably want to know how many people total may be part of the Morocco desert trip, and if there is a required minimum for the journey to actually happen. For example, maybe the Morocco desert tour company requires a minimum of 10 travelers or they will cancel the trip.
