It was the best meal on my most recent trip to Hong Kong. Clearly, they still serve some of the best food in Hong Kong. It’s hard to go to any city in Taiwan without someone telling you that the local pineapple cakes there are the best. Dawn Cake has found the perfect balance of not too dry and not too moist in their pineapple cakes, and they make the ideal Taichung souvenir that tourists can actually take home.
This handmade sweet confectionery by Chok Kee Confectionery has been around since 1947, and still delights customers to this day. Though it is possible to visit Kenting on a day trip from Kaohsiung, it looks like such a beautiful place so you may want to spend at least a night there. Recognized as the oldest city in Taiwan, Tainan served as the country’s capital for 200 years. There you’ll find historic Anping District which is home to several attractions like Anping Tree House, Anping Old Street, and Fort Zeelandia. Check out our Tainan travel guide for more information. We didn’t spend too much time in Sanmin District but from what I understand, it’s a mostly residential neighborhood with fewer tourist attractions and commercial areas. If  you’d like a quieter stay in Kaohsiung but still have easy access to the downtown area, then this may be a good place to stay.
We plan to have a self drive trip in Taiwan for 8D7N in December. We will arrive in and depart from Taipei, both in the afternoon. See my detailed guide to Dulan for all the information you need. After Dulan, you can return to Hualien, or continue south to Taitung City to catch the train or if you plan to make a full circle around Taiwan. For your fourth day in Hualien, hop on a bicycle or rent a scooter in Yuli to get to know one rural area better.

Or choose a different town for each night – Yuli , Chishang, Guanshan, and Luye all have gorgeous rural scenery, but each has its own vibe. If you follow the winding road up above the station, you can watch trains go by with the beach and sea behind them.
If the name rings a bell, you’re thinking of Yehliu – one of northern Taiwan’s most famous geological wonders and a popular day trip from Taipei. Even though Chishang is quite small, it’s got a lot going for it! The most notable attraction here is Brown Boulevard – a long stretch of road through lush rice fields with epic mountain backdrops. Besides cycling down Brown Boulevard, there are a couple of other noteworthy attractions. You’d have to be lucky to catch a local celebration, and photography should only be done with permission.
